3803	“The mere mention of the name ‘John Woodhouse’ to those who knew him brought forth strong statements of praise and commendation such as, ‘John Woodhouse - now there was a man. He could do almost anything and he knew almost everything. He was a most interesting man. He was a useful man. He contributed to the welfare of his communities in ways almost too numerous to mention. His skill and versatility were amazing to all who knew him.” John Woodhouse could rightly be remembered and honored for many things: his remarkable memory, intellect, versatility, work ethic, and spirituality. Examination of his life reveals another important quality that put all his other traits and talents to work for the Kingdom of God, and that was his willingness to serve. TIMELINE OF MAJOR EVENTS • 1830: Born on 21 July 1830 in Adwick le Street, a small town near Doncaster, Yorkshire, England. His parents were Charles Woodhouse (b. 1806) and Ann Long (b. 1806). • Growing up, he was religious in nature and planned to serve a mission to Africa for the Methodist church. • In 1849, he learned about the Restored Gospel from his landlady and sought out the missionaries to be taught more. • He was baptized on 15 May 1849 and ordained a priest on Jun 1, 1849. His parents and siblings soon joined the Church. He taught the Restored Gospel in the region. • On 6 January 1851, he emigrated with his parents and siblings to America. • On 21 March 1851, they arrived at St. Louis, Missouri after traveling upriver by boat. • They were out of money and found work to earn money to continue their journey. • His father and brother, Norman, died while they were in the St. Louis area. • In April of 1852, they joined a company of Saints heading upriver. • On 10 June 1852, they joined a wagon train going west and arrived in the valley of the Great Salt Lake on 10 September 1852. • In November 1852, he went to Provo to find work building a Sugar Factory. That factory did not materialize, but he spent time in that area. • On 10 April 1853, he traveled to Iron County (Cedar City area) in southern Utah on a mission to make iron needed to help establish the settlements. • Married Anne Creswick in January 1855 in Cedar City, Utah. (This marriage appears to have only lasted only a short time.) • In 1855, he was called on a mission to Las Vegas to make lead. • He married, Emma Smith Thomas, on 13 May 1856 in Cedar City, Utah. They were sealed in the Endowment House on 21 March 1857. • In 1857, he was called on a special mission to make salt petre, an ingredient necessary for making gun powder. • In 1857-58, he was a member of Mechanics Institute. They produced lead from ore, the first metal smelted in Utah. • In April of 1858, he served an “exploration” mission to the White Mountains to identify land suitable for future settlements. • After that brief mission, in August of 1858, he moved to Beaver and purchased a farm. He served as a Probate and County Clerk. • In 1862, he was called on a mission to go to the Missouri river to help bring Saints to Utah. He served as clerk and general assistant to the captain. • In 1864, he and his family left Beaver City and moved north to Lehi. • In 1874, he was called on mission to England. • On May 24, 1876, he was released from his mission and led a company of saints to Utah. • During his time in Lehi, he served as a City Alderman and as a Justice of the Peace. He founded and operated “The John Woodhouse Store” and held various Church and civic leadership roles. • He died on 10 September 1916 in Lehi, Utah when he was struck by a train. He was buried in the Lehi, Utah cemetery.
