    Notater:

Johannes Katzenbach was born on 16 Aug 1786 in Rensselaer County, New York. He was baptized at the Gilead Lutheran Church, Brunswick, New York in 1786.

Johnnes is the John Kotchapaw who married Deborah Way in 1815 in Brunswick, New York. Deborah’s parents had settled in the Centre Brunswick area sometime in about 1785.

John and Deborah had about ten children while they farmed in Rensselaer County.

About 1825, John, Deborah and some of their children moved from the US to a place two miles out of Belleville, Ontario. They emigrated with John’s brother George Ketchepaw
and his wife ( Susanne Gow) and child. They must have come up prior to 5 Mar 1826 because that is when Susanne gave birth to their second child. (Her first son was born in the US in 1821.)
Deborah’s brother, Reuben Bedell Way, and his family emigrated with them.

They likely chose to come to Prince Edward County because they had relatives there. Jacob Ketchabaw, John’s brother (born 15 Jun 1789 in Albany Co, NY) had moved to Canada by 1812 and to Hastings by 1814. Also, Deborah’s Uncle, Daniel Way, and his sons Samuel, James and Benjamin had settled there in 1789 as United Empire Loyalists after the War of Independence.

John Katzbashe (Kotchapaw) did Military Service: 1828-1831 in Thurlow, Hastings, Ontario, Canada and his brother Jacob Katzenbach is also listed in the Hastings militia in an 1825 list.

The United Empire Loyalists who settled in the county of Hastings and Prince Edward organized the first local Militia units for self-defense. The Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment is the modern descendant of those Militia units.
1804 Col. J Ferguson forms the 1st Regiment of Hastings Militia.
1812 The Regiments provided units which served in the War of 1812
1837-38 The Regiments provided units which served in the McKenzie Rebellion

John and Deborah Kotchapaw had at least 3 children born to them in Ontario. The Computerized Land Records Index shows that in 1846 both John and George had property next to each other in Thurlow, Hastings Co. concession 3 Lot W ½ 18 for George and E ½ 18 for John…CL Deed 01 C1113 reference 002 055….under the name Ketchipaw.

One summer day in 1848, John came in after a day's work on the farm to announce that he felt very sick. He died the next day. Deborah died a few months later. As four of their children - Hiram, Reuben, Deborah Ann, and Matilda were too young to look after themselves, their uncle Reuben Bedell Way and aunt Phoebe took them in. Reuben, the third youngest child of John and Deborah was our ancestor.

John died 14 Aug 1848 at the age of 62 in Hastings, Ontario, Canada . He was buried in the Cannifton Cemetery, Hastings County, Ontario (Bedell (Rupert's Property) Cemetery, Thurlow Township)

Johannes blev gift med Deborah Way i 1815 i Brunswick, Rensselaer, New York, USA. Deborah blev født i 1880 i Belleville, Hastings, Ontario, Canada; døde i 1815 i Hastings, Ontario, Canada. [Gruppeskema] [Familietavle]

Generation: 4

  1. 12.   Johannes Katzenbach blev født den 2 apr. 1763 i Albany, New York, USA; blev døbt den 8 maj 1763 i Dutch Reformed Church, Albany, New York, USA; døde i 1810 i Rensselaerville, Albany, New York, USA.

    Andre Begivenheder og Egenskaber:

    • Hjemmedøbt: 9 maj 1763, Reformed Dutch Church, Albany, New York, USA

    Notater:

Abraham Katzenbach was baptized on 8 May 1763 in the Reformed Dutch Church, Albany, N.Y.

Abraham did not go to Quebec with his father. He stayed in NY and fought with the Vermont Militia. (He lived near the border of Vermont) He is listed in the Daughter's of the American Revolution Patriot Index. Abraham Katzenbach/Catosaback/Catezeback is listed in "Soldiers, Sailors and Patriots of the Revolutionary War" found at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. The entry says he was born in 1763 and was a Corporal, VT. in Capt. Dater's Co. in 1781.

Revolutionary War Rolls for the State of Vermont contain two payrolls that list Abraham Catzeback. The first is for Oct 17, 1781 for answering an alarm and serving 4 days and the second is for 13 days service as Corporal Abrm.Catosaback beginning on Oct 23, 1781. He would have been 18 at the time. Also in his unit were Sgt. Jacob Rosenberger and Private Peter Rosenberger. They were likely related to his future wife Anna Rosenberger. She had brothers with those names.

Abraham married Anna Elizabeth “Betsy” Rosenberger (b. 4 May 1762 in Hoosick, NY) about 1783 somewhere in New York state. She was the ninth and youngest child of Jacob Rosenberger (born 4 Dec 1720 in Niederzell, Germany) and Regina Zitzer (Zhzer) who was baptized 19 May 1718 in Poppenweiler, Germany.

Abraham and Anna had six children including three sons who moved to Ontario - John, our ancestor, Jacob and George. Abraham was a farmer in Rensselaer County.

We can see how the spelling of his last name changed over time. In the 1800 United States Federal Census , he is listed as Abraham Cauchebaw of Scaghtikoke, Rensselaer Co., New York.

In the 1810 United States Federal Census , he is listed as A. Catehapaw of Schaghticoke, Rensselaer Co., New York, United States. So the morphing of Katzenbach into Kotchapaw (and also Ketzback, Catchpaw, Katchback, Katchpaw, Ketchabaw and more) happened. Those that could write had English ears and they were trying to spell a German name.

Abraham and Anna died later than 1810.

New York, USA; døde i 1810 i Rensselaer, New York, USA. [Gruppeskema] [Familietavle]

  2. 13.   Anna Elizabeth Rosenberger blev født den 4 maj 1762 i Hoosick, Rensselaer, New York, USA; blev døbt den 4 maj 1762 i Rensselaer, Rensselaer, New York, USA (datter af Jacob Rosenberger og Regina Zitzer); døde i 1810 i Rensselaer, New York, USA.

    Notater:

Anna Elizabeth Rosenberger was baptized 4 May 1762 in Hoosick, Rensselaer Co., New York.

Betsy was married first to Johannes Creller ( Kreller) who either died in the Battle of Bennington or died from wounds received there. Betsy and Johannes had two daughters Maria born 1776 and Elizabeth born 1777

Betsy Rosenberger’s brother George, married Regina Creller, her first husband’s sister.

The Rosenberger family can be found associated with the Creller family almost at every point in time, Betsy's brother Peter Rosenberger had a farm up in Stanbridge East, Quebec next to the Creller. Peter moved up into the Stanbridge Quebec area along with Peter Creller and his family.

Both Crellers and Rosenbergers were in the Militia and are buried in the same cemetery.

Betsy married Abraham Katzenbach (bapt 8 May 1763), son of Heinrich Katzenbach and Eva Defoe, in about 1783 in New York state. They had six children and their second was Johannes Kotchapaw, our ancestor.

Abraham and Betsy died later than 1810.
