    Notater:

John Alden was born in England about 1599 and died 12 September 1687 at the age of 88 or 89 Duxbury, Plymouth, Massachusetts.. He was a cooper by trade and hired on as a "Mayflower" crew member in that capacity at Southampton. The conditions of employment permitted him to either remain in America or return as a crew member to England. He chose to remain in the New World. He was one of the forty one signers of the Mayflower Compact.
About 1623, John Alden married Priscilla Mullins. Her parents had died in the general sickness of that first winter at Plymouth. About 1632 they moved to nearby Duxbury. In 1653 they moved into a second house which is still standing (105 Alden Street) and maintained by the Alden Kindred of America, Inc. An excavation in 1960 revealed the location of the original house, about 300 yards away. John Alden served in many public service capacities over the years, including assistant to he Governor and twice as Deputy Governor.
John and Priscilla had 10 children. There is some speculation that there was an 11th child, but only 10 have been verified through the extensive research of land records, wills and probates. Descendants from John Alden has been proven through eight of them: Elizabeth, John, Joseph, Rebecca, Ruth, Sarah, Jonathan, and David. Little is known about the other children, Priscilla, and Mary.
It is not known when Priscilla died, but perhaps she was still living as of 1685. John died on 12 September, 1687, the last survivor of those who signed the historic Mayflower Compact.
John Alden (1599 - 1687) is said to be the first passenger of the Mayflower to set foot on Plymouth Rock in 1620. He was a ship-carpenter by trade and a cooper for the Mayflower, that was usually docked at Southampton. He was also one of the founders of the Plymouth Colony and the seventh signer of the Mayflower Compact. Distinguished for practical wisdom, integrity and decision, he acquired and retained a commanding influence over his associates. Employed in public business he became the Governor's Assistant, the Duxbury Deputy to the General Court of Plymouth, a member under arms of Capt. Miles Standish's Duxbury Company, a member of Council of War, Treasurer of Plymouth Colony, and Commissioner to Yarmouth.

John Alden had settled with the Pilgrims in the Plymouth Colony, though not a pilgrim himself. He was hired to repair "The Mayflower" while she lay at Southampton, England. Without any religous motives, John decided to journey when she set sail, perhaps with the hope of being prosperous in the New World, or because he wished to follow Priscilla Mullens.[5] John wasn't the only man who had fallen for Priscilla. John's friend, military Captain Miles Standish had come to love the Maiden throughout the long voyage of 1620. A love triangle ensued with the result of John ultimately winning Priscilla's heart.[6] They married on May 12, 1622. The Captain, as it turns out, engaged in a campaign against rivaling Indians who plotted to kill newcomers. From 1633 until 1675 he was assistant to the governor of the colony, frequently serving as acting governor and also sat on many juries, including one of the two witch trials in the Plymouth Colony.
In 1634 Alden was jailed, in Boston, for a fight at Kenebeck in Maine between members of the Plymouth Colony and the Massachusetts Bay Colony. While Alden did not take part in the fight (which left one person dead) he was the highest ranking member the Massachusetts Bay colonists could get their hands on, and it was only through the intervention of Bradford that he was eventually released.
In later years Alden became known for his intense dislike of the Quakers and Baptists, who were trying to settle on Cape Cod. A letter survives complaining that Alden was too strict when it came to dealing with them.
John Alden was the last male survivor of the signers of the Mayflower Compact of 1620, and with the exception of Mary Allerton, he was the last survivor of the Mayflower's company. He died at Duxbury on September 12, 1687. Both he and his wife Priscilla lie buried in the Miles Standish Burial Ground.
The Alden residence is also in Duxbury, on the north side of the village, on a farm which is still in possession of their descendants of the seventh generation. He made no will, having distributed the greater part of his estate among his children during his life time.
John Alden's House was built in 1653 and is open to the public as a museum. It is run by the Alden Kindred of America, an organization which provides historical information about him and his home, including genealogical records of his descendants. John and Priscilla had the following children who survived to adulthood: Elizabeth, John (accused during the Salem witch trials), Joseph, Priscilla, Jonathan, Sarah, Ruth, Mary, Rebecca, and David. They have the most descendants today of all the pilgrim families.
There are several theories regarding Alden's ancestry. According to William Bradford's Of Plymouth Plantation, he was hired as a cooper in Southampton, England just before the voyage to America. In The English Ancestry and Homes of the Pilgrim Fathers, Charles Edward Banks suggested that John was the son of George and Jane Alden and grandson of Richard and Avys Alden of Southampton. However, there are no further occurrences of the names George, Richard, and Avys in his family which would have been unusual in the seventeenth century.
Another theory is that John Alden came from Harwich, England where there are records of an Alden family who were related by marriage to Christopher Jones, the Mayflower's captain. In this case, he may have been the son of John Alden and Elizabeth Daye.
Notable descendants include: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Ichabod Alden, Orson Welles, Dan Quayle, Raquel Welch, Frank Nelson Doubleday, Samuel Eliot Morison, Gamaliel Bradford, Elizabeth Palmer Peabody, Herbert Henry Dow, Martha Graham, Adlai Stevenson III, Jan Garrigue Masaryk, Dick Van Dyke, Julia Child, William Cullen Bryant, John Trumbull, Ned Lamont, Matt Hasselbeck and Marilyn Monroe.

At the time of the sailing of the vessel in 1620 for America, he was about twenty-one years old. William Bradford, second governor of the colony, wrote that John Alden was "hired for a cooper, at South Hampton (England), where the ship victualed (brought on food for the voyage); and being a hopeful young man, was much desired, but left to his own liking to go or stay when he came here; but he stayed and married here." His trade of cooper (barrel maker) was one of the vital trades needed by the colonists. John married fellow Mayflower pilgrim Priscilla Mullins, about 1623, but the exact date has been lost to history. He became one of the Purchasers and Undertakers for the colony, serving also as Assistant in the Colony government, Deputy Governor, Colony Treasurer, and a member of the committee in charge of revising laws. He was one of the founders of Duxbury, Massachusetts, and owned several pieces of property. Although he died without a will, an inventory of his property at the time of his death was taken in November 1687. A legend of a rivalry between himself and pilgrim Miles Standish for Priscilla Mullins arose, and was first published in the book, "Collection of American Epitaphs and Inscriptions" in 1814, by Timothy Alden. The story was popularized by the poem, "The Courtship of Miles Standish" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in 1858, however, there is no documentation of such a rivalry to have existed in any of the records of the Plymouth Colony. Priscilla Mullins was born probably near Guildford or Dorking, co. Surrey, England, to William Mullins. She came on the Mayflower to Plymouth in 1620 with her father, brother Joseph, and mother Alice. Her family, herself excepted, died the first winter. She was shortly thereafter, 12 May 1623, married to John Alden, the Mayflower's cooper, who had decided to remain at Plymouth rather than return to England with the ship. They John and Priscilla lived in Plymouth until the late 1630s, when theypmoved north to found the neighboring town of Duxbury.

John and Priscilla would go on to have ten children, most of whom lived to adulthood and married. They have an enormous number of descendants living today.

American Colonial Figure. One of the charter members of the Plymouth Colony, arriving on the first voyage of the "Mayflower", her marriage to John Alden is the third known marriage in the Plymouth colony. Born in Dorking, Surrey, England, she was a young girl of 16 or 17 at the time of the sailing of the Mayflower in 1620 for America, when she arrived with her parents. When her parents died in the first winter ashore, in early 1621, a hard time when about half of the colony perished, she chose to stay with the Pilgrims even though she had a brother and sister surviving in England.

Between the time of her parents' deaths in 1621 and her marriage to John Alden about 1623, it is not known whom she stayed with or how she survived. Biography
Last Name at birth is apparently Simonson.[1]

Moses Simmons' surname "Simmons" has been spelled different ways in the old records: Symonds, Symons, Simonson, Simmonson. Many of his later descendants have used the spelling Simmons.

He was probably born about 1604.

A previous version of this profile claimed, citing only online trees, that his parents were Moses Simmons and Lydia Holland. Anderson's Great Migration profile names no parents.
Jeremy Bangs analyzed the extant Leiden records after Anderson and found no obvious identification of the immigrant's parents. He does, however, make the case that the patronymic naming conventions of the time and place would indicate that Moses' father's first name would have been Simon.[2]
That he was of Dutch, not English, origins was called out by Bradford who in describing the Dutch who spoke English referred to Moses Symonson as the son of one who communed with the Dutch church in Leiden, and it wa because of this association that Moses was welcomed into the church in Plymouth, New England.[3]
He was a "Separatist" by religion who lived in Leiden, Holland before migrating to Plymouth Colony on the Fortune (the second Pilgrim ship) in 1621. He is considered to be part of the Pilgrim Company. He was single at the distribution of cattle in 1627. He became a freeman about 1634.

He married at least once, and probably twice.[citation needed] He was the father of seven children: Rebecca, Moses, Mary, John, Sarah, Elizabeth, and Aaron. In 1660, his wife signed a deed with him. Her first name was Sarah. She seems to have been the mother of his children. She seems to have pre-deceased him.

The maiden name of Moses Simmons' wife is not known. Some sources identify her as Sarah Chandler, the daughter of Roger Chandler, as his wife, but Sarah Chandler married Solomon Leonard. Edmund Chandler also had a daughter Sarah Chandler. There is no contemporary record that confirms a marriage between them. The two families probably knew each other, as they lived in the same towns and at one time their families owned adjoining land. Benjamin Chandler, Edmund's son, was witness to Moses Simmon's will dated June 17, 1689.
Moses Simmons died before September 10, 1691, the date of the Inventory for probate.[4]

Several of the Simmons children married children of John Alden, another neighbor.

    Biography
Sarah was married to Moses Simonson. Her maiden name is not known. If she was the mother of Moses' children, they married by 1635. They were clearly married by 13 December 1660, when Moses executed a deed that referred to the "consent of my wife Sarah."[1]

She is sometimes identified as Sarah Chandler, but no basis for this identification has been found.[2]
This is a long-time error that has been multiplied over and over online. The Mayflower Society has documented the lineage of Sarah Chandler, through her mother, Isabella Chilton, and has documented that Sarah Chandler married Solomon Leonard. Please see the Mayflower sources someone has attached.
Moses Simmons did have a wife named Sarah, but her last name is never mentioned anywhere. It cannot be Sarah Chandler Leonard because both couples were alive and having families at the same time. they were contemporaries and neighbors at times.

    Notater:

According to the Compilation of Family Group Sheets of the Allen Family of New England, Samuel Allen removed to New England before his father.
He was a first settler in Boston, Massachusetts in 1628. He resided in Duxbury, Massachusetts before moving to Braintree where he was made a freeman 6 May 1635.
Samuel was married twice. His first marriage was to a lady named Ann who died in 1641. He remarried to Margaret, widow of Edward Lamb several years after Ann had died.

It has since been determined by other research found that Ann's last name was Whetmore or Wetmore.
Will made in 1669 and names his children. Added by Steven Losey from https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/161707096/samuel-allen The following sketch is for the purpose of refuting any attempt to claim this Samuel Allen was the son of George Allen of Sandwich, Mass.[1] Further, to clearly establish Samuel as the father of sons Samuel and James, who married two daughters of the writer's ancestors - George Partridge and Sarah Tracy of Duxbury, Mass.

Samuel Allen, born perhaps circa 1601 in England of unknown parents, d. of record in Braintree (then part of Suffolk County, now Norfolk County), Mass on the "6th mo., 2d day, 1669" (i.e., Aug. 2, 1669), the same day he signed his recorded will.

In 1625 Thomas Morton, along with some 30-40 non-Plymouth Pilgrims, parted company from Plymouth and established beyond the limits of the Plymouth Colony "Merrymount," subsequently renamed "Mount Wollaston," now encompassed by Braintree and Quincy, Mass. After the 1630 arrival of the Massachusetts Bay colonists, the Town of Boston claimed jurisdiction over "Mount Wollaston." Boston's earliest grants at "the Mount" began in 1634 as large farms for Boston's prominent citizens and clergy. By the year 1639 Boston's grants of land at "the Mount" were for general settlement based on 4 acres per family member at a cost of 3 shillings per acre.

The earliest known record of Samuel Allen in New England is on Feb. 24, 1639/40 when the town of Boston granted him, among others, land at Mount Wollaston (that part now Braintree) consisting of 28 acres to accommodate 7 heads [BTR 49.]

On an unknown date and place probably in England, Samuel m. 1) a wife purportedly named Ann Whitmore; however, both her first and purported maiden name are unproved. She is claimed to have died in Braintree Sept. 29, 1641, but no record can be found confirming that date as fact. Samuel Allen had the following four known children by his first wife:

    • i. Samuel Allen, Jr., b. Nov. 10, 1632, d. testate in Bridgewater, Mass. between June 29, 1703 (date of his will), and Dec. 21, 1705 (date of probate); m. by early 1660, Sarah Partridge, dau. of George Partridge and Sarah Tracy, b. circa 1639 in Duxbury, Mass. She d. Aug. 7, 1722 in Bridgewater, Mass. Ten children of the family, all descendants of Stephen Tracy of the 1623 Little Ann passage to Plymouth, Mass.

    • ii. James Allen, b. after July 25, 1636, d. July 25, 1714 in Chilmark, Mass., Æ 78 (g.s.); m. by 1662, Elizabeth Partridge, sister of his brother Samuel's wife, b. after Aug. 8, 1643 in Duxbury, Mass. She d. Aug. 8, 1722 in Chilmark, Mass., Æ 79 (g.s.) Twelve children of the family, all descendants of Stephen Tracy of the 1623 Little Ann passage to Plymouth, Mass.

    • iii. Sarah Allen, b. Mar. 30, 1639, was living Sept. 16, 1690 in Preston, Conn.; m. after Mar. 7, 1655/56 as his 2nd wife, Josiah Standish, s. of Capt. Myles Standish of the 1620 Mayflower and his wife Barbara, b. circa 1633 either in Duxbury or Plymouth, Mass. He d. Mar. 19, 1689/90 in Preston, Conn. Eight known, possibly nine, children of the family, all Capt. Myles Standish Mayflower descendants.

    • iv. Mary Allen, b. circa 1641, was living in Boston, Mass. in 1684 as her husband's widow; m. Jan 24, 1656/57 of record in Weymouth, Mass., Nathaniel Greenwood of Boston. He d. testate July 31, 1684 in Boston (g.s., #8448145). Five recorded and one unrecorded children of the family in Boston.

On an unknown date and place before late 1649, Samuel m. Margaret, the widow of Edward Lamb of Boston, who survived him. Like his first wife, that Margaret's maiden name was French is unproved. They had two known children in Braintree:

    • v. Joseph Allen, b. May 15, 1650, d. Mar. 20, 1726/7 in Braintree, Mass.; m. 1) Jan. 30, 1670/1 in Braintree, Rebecca Leader (not Ruth Searles) [2], and 2) Jan. 27, 1703/4 in Braintree, the widow Lydia (Ford) Holbrook.

    • vi. Abigail Allen, b. after Jan 25, 1650/1.

In his Braintree, Mass. will dated Aug. 2, 1669, Samuel gave to son Samuel £20, to son James £5, to son-in-law Josiah Standish £5 (husb. of dau. Sarah), to son-in-law Nathaniel Greenwood £5 (husb. of dau. Mary), and to unmarried dau. Abigail £30. The balance of the estate he left one-half to wife Margaret and one-half to son Joseph, with Margaret authorized to pay £10 amongst her own Lamb children if she saw need. He named wife Margaret executrix and son Joseph executor of the will. The estate inventory totaling £228.12.09 was taken Aug. 27, 1669. The witnesses to the will and both the executrix and executor gave proof of the will Sept. 16, 1669.

[1] Samuel Allen, the acknowledged son of George Allen of Sandwich, Mass., was living in Boston July 10, 1656 when on that date "Henery and Samuell Allin of Boston ... joint heirs of a piece of land ... in the bounds of Sandwich ... which was the proper possession of our father George Allin deceased, and by him given to us ... with the consent of our Mother, to say now Katheren Collins who hath interest during her life," sold the land "unto George Alline of Sandwich" (Henry and Samuel's brother) [MD 25:136-37, citing PCLR 3:37]. After this deed Samuel, son of George of Sandwich, disappears from the records.

[2] See NEHGR 54 (July 1900): 349-50 for the well developed argument regarding the correct identity of Joseph Allen's first wife.
