William Dickinson Pratt was born September 3, 1802 in Worcester, New York to Jared and Charity Pratt, the second oldest of their five sons.
The Pratt family was poor, moving from settlement to settlement in New York as farmers and day laborers. William and his brothers had limited opportunities for education and worked hard from a young age.
In 1823, William, his father Jared, and his brother Parley bought some forested land near Ostego, New York. In spite their efforts to improve and farm the land, they could not raise enough money to make the payments, and lost everything after three years.
Following this failure, William went on his own to New York City in search of work; his family heard nothing from him for several years and feared him dead when a William Pratt was reported drowned in the Hudson River. William had not drowned but spent about five years working and moving from place to place before settling in Ohio not far from his brother Parley in 1830.
In 1831, William followed the lead of his brothers and was baptized into the recently founded Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He moved to the church’s headquarters in Kirtland where he was ordained an Elder by Sidney Rigdon in 1833 and was intensively involved in church activities, including carrying dispatches for Joseph Smith and participating in the 1834 Camp of Israel expedition to Missouri (“Zion’s Camp”). William was ordained a seventy and appointed member of First Quorum of the Seventy in 1835.
On December 1, 1836, William married Hannah Ward in Kirtland, Ohio. Their daughter Sarah Jane was born in 1838 in Kirtland but passed away before her first birthday. Around this time William and Hannah joined other church member in moving to Far West, Missouri, where they experienced significant hardship before being forced from the state in the winter of 1838-1839. Following their expulsion from Missouri, William and Hannah settled first in Bryant, Illinois and then in Nauvoo. Shortly after their arrival in Nauvoo, Hannah became sick and died two weeks later on September 20th, 1840.
On March 1st, 1841, William married Wealthy Eddy Shumway, a recent widow with two children. William and Wealthy had 3 children while living in Nauvoo; Martha Marinda, William Jared, and Stephen. Of these, only William Jared lived to adulthood. In 1844, William was in New York serving a mission when he learned of the deaths of Joseph and Hyrum Smith. On his return he was ordained a high priest and served several more missions to New York in 1844 and 1845. In 1846, William and his family suffered in the increasingly hostile situation in Nauvoo, eventually fleeing across the river.
In 1848, for reasons that are not entirely clear, William and Wealthy separated and divorced. In 1850, William was living with Losana Bentley, her daughter Virginia Newman, and their daughter Mirza Liona Pratt in Pottawattamie county, Iowa. In 1851, William left Iowa with his brother Orson and Orson’s family for the journey west, arriving in Salt Lake City on October 4th. William remarried and practiced polygamy while living in Utah, marrying at least three wives including: Jane Hawley, 24 August 1857; Catherine Frederickson, 24 October 1863; Azubah Cox, 17 July 1867.
William died in Salt Lake City on 15 September 1870 at the age of 68 and was buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.

Wealthy Eddy was born 24 March 1810 in Solon, Maine to Rhoda and John Fuller Eddy, the fifth of ten children. She lived in Maine until about age 7 when she and her family moved to North Java, New York.
In 1830, Wealthy grew interested in the preaching of elders of the recently founded Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her family, however, fiercely opposed the Mormon movement and forbade Wealthy any contact with it. Faced with her family’s strong objections, Wealthy ran from home to join the church. Her parents disowned her and she never saw them again.
After leaving home, Wealthy met Stephen Billings Shumway, who would also join the LDS church. They were married 6 June 1831. While living in New York they had two children; Clarissa, who died at age two, and Ammi Warren.
Around 1835, Wealthy and Stephen moved to Kirtland, Ohio to join the main body of the church. They remained in Kirtland until 1838, when the increasingly hostile environment led them to join a group of Latter-day Saints bound for Jackson County Missouri. Due to the birth of daughter Mary Amanda on October 18, 1838, Wealthy and her family had to stop over at Randolph. In doing so, they narrowly avoided being present at Hawn's Mill with the rest of their group at the massacre of October 30th.
The family lived in difficult circumstance in Missouri until 1839, when they were forced to flee the state. They settled in the city of Nauvoo, Illinois with many others of their faith. Not long after their arrival, Stephen took ill of appendicitis and died, leaving Wealthy a widow with two small children.
On 27 February 1841, Wealthy married William Dickinson Pratt who lived in her ward in Nauvoo and whose first wife had died the previous year. Wealthy and William had 4 children while living in Nauvoo; Martha Marinda, William Jared, Stephen, and Mirza Lyona. Of these, only William Jared lived to adulthood.
Wealthy and William lived in Nauvoo through its growth as a city, the murder of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, and the transition of leadership to Brigham Young. When the exodus to the west began, William traveled with his brother Orson to Utah, arriving in 1851. Wealthy, however, remained in Iowa with the children. The details are unclear, but evidently sometime around this period William and Wealthy became estranged and divorced.
In 1952, Wealthy joined the Henry Bryant Manning Jolley Company and crossed the plains alone with her three living children; Ammi Warren, age 19, Mary Amanda, age 13, and William Jared, age 7. They made the journey safely and settled in Payson.
In 1854, Wealthy married William Cornwall Patten, whom she’d known in Nauvoo. William had been married three times previously, losing all of his wives to early deaths, and Wealthy cared for several of his children as stepmother. Wealthy and William had one daughter together, Sarah Wealthy Patten, born in 1857 in Payson.
In 1860, Wealthy and William joined others from their area in answering the call of Brigham Young to settle the Cache Valley. They moved their family to the area that would later become southern Idaho, settling first in Franklin, and later Oxford. Around 1864 William and Wealthy appear to have separated, though it is not clear when or why, but William is listed in the 1880 census as “divorced”.
In 1883, Wealthy’s daughter Mary died leaving behind a large family. Wealthy cared for and raised several of Mary’s children, as well as the son of Ammi Warren, who disappeared around the same time.
Wealthy lived the last years of her life with daughter Sarah Wealthy and her son Jared Pratt. She passed away July 18, 1892 at the age of 82 and was buried in Fremont, Idaho.
