Lavina Richardson Hansen was born August 16, 1864, in Payson, Utah. She was the only daughter of Shadrach and Sarah Haskell Eames Richardson. She was only four years old when her mother died, but her father was both mother and father to her.
She was married while still in her teens to Isaac Hansen, a promising young farmer of Benjamin, Utah.
She was a hard working woman always striving to make a happy home for her husband and children. She was the mother of eight children. She died when stricken with scarlet fever on December 21, 1900.
She was survived by:

Karen Pedersdatter, youngest daughter of Peder and Maren Johansdatter Pedersen, was born in Ackerup (Akkerup), Funen, Denmark, February 2, 1825.

She had little chance for much education as she had to work as a hired girl as early as possible to assist the family.
She married Peder Hansen April 24, 1851. Two girls were born from this union.

Karen was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on March 9, 1853. With her husband and little daughter Ane Dorthea Christina she left her native country that same year on December 26 to join with the Mormon people in America.

Two brothers of her husband, James and Jorgen Hansen, and a large company of saints arrived in Liverpool, England on January 9, 1854. Here on the 16th day of January she gave birth to a baby girl. Her sister-in-law, Mrs. James Hansen, gave birth to a baby boy that same day.

When the babies were three days old, they started the journey across the ocean on the said ship, Benjamin Adams. Both the women were very sick on the journey. While on the ship, measles broke out and little Ane Dorthea Christina took sick and died. She was buried in the Atlantic Ocean.
They were on the ocean seven weeks and then landed at New Orleans.

After they arrived at Kansas City, cholera broke out in their camp, and Jorgen Hansen and several of his children died. Immediately after that, they commenced their journey with ox teams and wagons across the plains.
They had only traveled a few days when Karen’s husband, Peder, became ill and died. He was buried on the plains.

Shortly after that, her sister-in-law, Mrs. James (Jens) Hansen was taken ill and died on July 29.

Karen was sick all the way, and while on the plains. Her little baby Ane Dorthea, also died and was buried between two large trees. They left enough room for another grave thinking Karen would die and be buried by the side of her child. But she revived and her life was spared to complete the journey to Utah.

She was comforted to some extent by taking and nursing her little nephew Joseph Hansen, the son of Jens and Maren Hansen, who was born the same day as her own baby. Maren had died on July 29.
They finally arrived in Salt Lake City, October 9, 1854, almost a year from the time they left Denmark.

On February 3, 1855, Karen was married to James (Jens) Hansen, brother of her first husband, Peder Hansen, who had lost his wife and child during the hard journey. She continued to care for his baby Joseph, whom she had cared for since his mother’s death. They endured the hardships of pioneer life together.

When her son Peter Hansen was born April 28, 1856, there was but five pounds of bran to be had. This was saved for mother while she was sick. The rest of the family must live on roots until harvest time.

They were blessed with some grain at harvest time, for which they were thankful to their Heavenly Father.

On July 24, 1857 word was received that Johnson’s army was headed for Utah. Preparations were started for protection against the army. All the women and children were to leave Salt Lake City, while the men stayed in the city on guard prepared to set fire to their homes in, case the army tried to take possession of their city.

The Hansen family lived in Salt Lake City until July 1, 1858. They then moved to Spanish Fork, where her daughter Mary was born a few days after they arrived there.
She was president of the teachers of the Relief Society for several years before the wards were divided. She called the teachers together once a month and visited among all the Relief Society workers of the city; thus she became acquainted with almost everyone in Spanish Fork. When the city was divided into wards, she was chosen President of the Fourth Ward Relief Society, which position she held until she passed away.

She was very desirous of having a Relief Society house and worked hard to get the Relief Society Hall we are still using.

Her husband, James Hansen, gave the ground and she had the sisters come to their home, where they sewed carpet rags and made quilts and did all the work they could to get money to build the house. She always served refreshments to the workers.

She lived to see the house completed. The first meeting held in the Relief Society Hall was held a few days before her death. Her funeral was the second public meeting to be held in the house she had labored so hard to help build.
In the home she was looked to as the manager and her advice was sought by the rest of the family.

In the home each wife had her certain work to do. Mother had the duty of cooking for the whole family. She always had to bake bread twice each day. There was usually a large family to cook for. At one time there were thirty-five in the family.
She was head of the family quite a share of the time, as her husband was sent on three different missions to Denmark.
When he received the call for his first mission in 1866, he was at work in the fields at Palmyra. The day the call came she walked out to the fields to take the letter to him. He had to be ready to leave in a few days. He left his four wives and seventeen children, the oldest twelve years old, and went back to his native land for two and one-half years.
Times were not very prosperous then. Whenever a nickle could be had, it was saved to buy a stamp to send a letter to Father.

On his return from his first mission, Father was surprised to find that his wives and children had gleaned over 300 bushels of wheat. The oldest boys, not yet in their teens, had planted and harvested some also.

Mother made the tallow candles for our only light. We had a few sheep which we sheared; the wool we corded and spun and wove into cloth for dresses and suits for the boys.
Conditions were quite different in those days than now.

There were no stores to buy our supplies from; we had to raise our own food and make our own clothing. We raised our vegetables and cured our meats. We raised sugar cane and made our own molasses. We preserved some fruit with the molasses and dried fruit and ground cherries.

After the manifesto the family couldn't live together, so each wife had her own home or apartment, and Mother had her own little home where she lived with Father and her brother-in-law, George Peter Hansen, who had always made his home with them. Brother Benjamin Hansen, whose mother had died several years before, also lived with them. Her home was always open to poor people and many of the emigrants from Denmark were quite often entertained there, sometimes for weeks, until they could get settled some place.

For several years before her death, it was customary to have all her grandchildren come a certain day during the holidays and she would bake “evelskew”, a Danish fried cake. Several of them still remember that day.

She died May 12, 1896. She lived and died a faithful Latter-day Saint. Her posterity now numbers several hundred. She was mother of eight children as follows: Ane Dorthea Christena, Ane Krestine Hansen, Peter P. Hansen, Maren Krestine Hansen Beckstrom, Sarah P. Hansen Swenson, Isaac P. Hansen, Emma Dorthea Hansen, Hyrum P. Hansen, also her foster son Joseph Hansen.

The following was extracted from the Richardson Family Website and was published in "The Faces and Places of Benjamin, Utah":

Shadrach Richardson was born on November 11, 1816 in Cumberland County, Kentucky. He was one of twelve children born to Shadrach Richardson and Mary Elizabeth Garrett. In 1833, Shadrach and Elizabeth moved their family to Illinois. While in Illinois, the Richardson family met and became good friends with a widow named Sarah Scott Stewart and her children. In 1837, Sarah’s son, Benjamin Franklin Stewart, married Shadrach’s sister, Polly. In that same year, both families moved to Iowa. The Stewart family settled in Fox River, Van Buren County, and the Richardsons in Keg Creek, Mills County. They did not lose track of one another, however, and in 1839 Shadrach married Benjamin’s sister Lavina Stewart.

They made their home on Keg Creek where seven children were born to them, five of whom died in infancy. In the year 1849 the gold rush to California spread over the country. Shadrach and Lavina felt the urge to try their fortune in this new land and made the necessary arrangements to start this long and dangerous journey.

Taking what belongings they could carry in a prairie schooner and their two little boys, Shadrach Montgomery and William Wilshire, they started the long and hard journey to the dream land of the west. They arrived in Payson, Utah, in the fall of 1852, weary and foot-sore, but hoping to go on to California. They rested while visiting their brother and sister, Benjamin Franklin and Polly Richardson Stewart. But the trials and hardships incident to their journey across the plains proved too much for Lavina and she passed away in December, 1852, leaving her two little boys and their father to the mercy and kindness of relatives and the good people of Payson. Lavina was one of the first to be buried in the Payson cemetery.

After the death of his wife, Shadrach had no more desire to go on to California and decided to make his home in Utah. In 1857, he was baptized and confirmed a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In 1860, he married Sarah Haskell Aimes (also spelled Emes), who had returned from San Bernardino, California with her children when her husband Ellis Aimes joined the Reorganized LDS Church. Four children were born to Sarah and Shadrach, three boys and one girl, Thomas, David, Lavina, and Richard. In September 1869, Sarah died and he was again left alone to provide for his family.

In 1869, he homesteaded a parcel of land in Benjamin and built a log cabin near a bubbling spring of very warm water (known later as Arrowhead Resort). He moved in when the home was complete. This was a home for them until they were all old enough to go out and establish homes for themselves.

He died in Benjamin at the home of his oldest son, Shadrach Montgomery Richardson, on June 18, 1890 and was buried in the Payson Cemetery.

Sarah Haskell was born in Fairfield, Franklin County, Vermont on December 24, 1826, daughter of George Nile Haskell and Sarah Elizabeth Runnels. She came to Utah with her parents. She married Ellis Ames as a second wife, and was sealed to him by Brigham Young on November 24, 1850. They settled in Provo, Utah where in April of 1851 her husband Ellis Ames was selected first mayor of Provo City. He was also a judge and served for two years. While in Provo there were three children born to them, then in the spring of 1854 they moved to California. Her father and families moved to California with the same wagon train.

(My mother, Sarah’s daughter, told me these things.)

She didn’t like California so when her father, mother and family with other families decided to come back to Utah, she felt like she could not stay there without any of them so she decided to come back with them. They set a date to leave there so they could all be ready to go back together as it was too dangerous for one or two wagons to go alone. Three days before the date set to leave there, on April 10, 1856 Sarah gave birth to a baby girl, my mother, Sarah Angeline Ames Losee, so they put Sarah in the wagon with her four children, leaving her husband there with his first wife and family. She never did go back. After surviving many hardships, they arrived in Payson when the baby was three months old. They settled in Payson and in the spring of 1860 Sarah was married to Shadrich Richardson, a widower, with two small boys. Four children were born to them, three boys and a girl, making a family of ten children.

In those days there was not too much chance for an education or for good reading material. At that time there were several monthly magazines published and different ones would subscribe for them. They had very interesting stories in them, mostly continued ones. A few chapters would be published each month, then continued until the next month. Beings Sarah was a very good reader, the neighbors would gather at her house in the long evenings with their magazines and books and have her read aloud to them. Many pleasant evenings were spent that way while they lived in Payson.

The Spaniards sometimes brought bands of horses up from Mexico to sell or trade to the pioneers. Sarah’s oldest child of her first marriage was a girl, and when she was 16 she fell in love with a young Spaniard that was with the horse traders. They were camped east of Spanish Fork and after selling their horses went back to Mexico. She ran away with them and married her young beau.

The night the Spaniards left she didn’t come home and the next morning when they found out she had gone with the Spaniards, some of the men went on horses and tried to overtake them, but they had been gone all night and was too far ahead. My mother told us that her mother grieved so much, and for a long time she would stand outside at night for hours and watch and listen thinking her girl would come back, but she never did. She always left a lighted lamp in the window and 2 years after her disappearance Sarah passed away. The daughter, Julia, being just 16 years old was afraid to let them know where she was fearing they would come after her, so she never wrote to them for a few years, but by that time her mother had passed away.

Sarah died September 28, 1869 in Payson, Utah and is buried in the Payson City Cemetery.

George Monterville Ames, born 1 January 1853 in Provo, Utah. He married Ellen Sophia Flanders on 12 December 1877 in Provo, Utah; he died 19 December 1928.
Rudolph Ames, born 5 March or 28 March 1854 in Provo, Utah. He married Ann Eliza Austin in about 1877, location isn't known; he died 12 December 1886.
Sarah Angeline Ames, born 10 April 1856 in San Bernardino, California, she married David Alma Losee on
10 April 1874. She died 11 November 1899.
