    Notater:

Lydia Ann Nilsson Tuft was born in Monroe, Sevier, Utah where she lived her entire life. Her husband, Nels Carl Tuft died young and left her widowed for 37 years.
Her granddaughter Marilyn wrote these memories:
While living with Grandma Tuft, I learned a lot from her about living righteously. I often have a memory of her sitting in her rocking chair and reading the scriptures. One of the little poems she quoted was, “It is a sin to steal a pin, how much more a greater thing?” My cousin Shirley and I used to embroidery on dish towels. Grandma said, “Be careful that you don’t sew on Sunday or you’ll have to take the stitches out with your nose in Heaven”. When I was about seven years old, Heber J. Grant was to be the main speaker at our Sunday Stake Conference in my hometown of Monroe. I went with Grandma Tuft to the Monroe Pavilion to hear him talk. I don’t now recall exactly what he said, but I know he preached a powerful sermon which touched my heart. I came away from the conference with a sure knowledge that he was a Prophet of God and I pledged in my heart that I
would always live the gospel as he had challenged us to do. Throughout my childhood, even when we didn't live with Grandma Tuft, we often lived close by and since mother was her only daughter, they spent a lot of time together. I was usually there listening in on their conversation. Grandma was very strict about religion. She would chide my mother because her garments did not come well over the knee-cap.
Grandma Tuft only lived a few blocks away. She was the only grandparent I knew. My grandfather had passed away at a younger age (Grandpa Tuft died suddenly after an appendicitis operation when he was only fifty three, leaving her and her boys with the full responsibility of a large farm and many sheep.) and Grandma said to my mother at the time, “My sun has set forever”.
We walked to her house a lot. Grandma Tuft walked to our house for Sunday dinner each week. We always had Thanksgiving dinner at her house. When I was in my late teens, the town asked me to represent Monroe in the pioneer festivities, and they had a float for Miss Monroe. I was pleased and proud to be able to ride on the float in the parade with my Grandma Tuft, two generations of Monroe ladies; one a teen learning and growing the other a true pioneer, learned and imparting lessons of life
Grandma didn't laugh much and thought life was very hard. She was a sober, serious minded woman, but we all felt her love. She always had delicious homemade cookies in the jar. She was quick to bandage a wounded finger or knee. It was a sad day when Grandma's house caught on fire and the top level of the house burned off, destroying not only the upstairs, but a lot of the old things we loved to get into when we were there. But sorrows can often turn into blessings. The remains of the upstairs was removed and a new roof put over the one level remaining, which gave Grandma a comfortable one-level bungalow, making it much easier for her to take care of in her aging years

Jeppa Nilsson was bom 5 October 1842 in Vastra Torp, Lilla Isie, Malmohus, Sweden to Nils Anderson (Schill) and Elna Jeppason (Olsen). The family heard the gospel from LDS missionaries and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Malmohus, Sweden. Jeppa was baptized on 17 July 1858. Jeppa did some missionary work in Sweden before leaving for Zion. He came with his 14 year old brother, Anders(Andrew) to the United States on the ship MONARCH OF THE SEA, sailing from Liverpool, England, 28 April 1864. Jeppa was listed in the record as Jeppa Nilsson, Andrew was listed as Anders Schill. Jeppa and his brother Andrew immigrated to Utah. They worked and sent money to help their parents and younger children get to America. On the way across the ocean, Jeppa's mother died and was buried at sea, leaving Nils Anderson to continue the joumey alone with three young children, the youngest, Olof being only three years old. "In the meantime Jeppa had met and married Susan Swain, the daughter of John Swain and Elizabeth Warden, who had joined the church and came to Utah also. Jeppa and Susan were married in Fort Alma (Monroe), 21 March 1867, just a month before the people of Sevier were driven into Sanpete County because of Indian troubles; when the Indian hostilities were at an end and their family returned to Monroe.
The 1900 United States Census lists Jeppa Nilsson, number of years in the U.S.-36, Naturalized, Occupation - Groceryman, can read, write, and speak English, owned property with mortgage, it was a farm and the farm schedule was 48. In the early 1880’s the Nilsson brothers, Jeppa, Andrew and Christopher went up on the mountain following the ridge above Oak Flat They built a road under Monroe Peak to the north from Mud Flat into Nilsson Hollow." Family members state the following: "The first sawmill was set up in Dry Creek Canyon by the Nilsson brothers, Jeppa, Andrew and Christopher, who built it in 1883." Jeppa and Susan Nilsson ran a farm there in Monroe. The Nilsson brothers also built the first lumber yard in Monroe. Jeppa Albert's wife, Elizabeth, said that Albert's mother use to spin silk into cloth.
About 1884, Jeppa purchased a store on the northeast comer of Main and 1st North and moved his family into a home behind and over the store (records show his brothers were involved in the store as well). His is where they raised their family. They ran this business until the spring of 1900. By this time Jeppa was nearly blind. They then moved to a home on northeast comer of 2nd N. 1st E. When Jeppa was left alone at the time of Susan's death James Niels (son) and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Richey, lived in this home with him.

Jeppa blev gift med Susan Swain den 21 mar. 1867 i Monroe, Sevier, Utah, USA. Susan blev født den 26 apr. 1847 i Coventry, Warwickshire, England, United Kingdom; døde den 17 mar. 1907 i Monroe, Sevier County, Utah, United States of America; blev begravet den 21 mar. 1907 i Monroe, Sevier County, Utah, United States of America. Notater:

Susan Swain Nilsson lived in Coventry, Warwickshire, England. She and her parents, John and Elizabeth Swain were converted to the gospel. In l863 when Susan was sixteen years old, she and her parents, along with her two young brothers, sailed from London to New York City on the ship Amazon. They went from New York to Omaha, Nebraska by boat and train, then were there outfitted with a wagon full of supplies and oxen to pull the wagon and made their trek to Utah. Susan walked all the way, taking turns carrying her baby brother.

After traveling for a few days on the plains, the Swain wagon caught fire and most of their luggage, belongings and what little they had, was burned. This was a great loss to them. The teamsters of their wagon train took a great interest in the little crippled lad, Albert, and allowed him to ride most of the way. John and Elizabeth Swain and Susan walked all the way from Omaha to Salt Lake City and took turns carrying Ed. Those not so occupied gathered "buffalo chips" for their fire each night. Grandfather, John Swain, used to say that he broke a tooth trying to eat the hardtack bread. "They arrived in Salt Lake City 4 October 1863, having walked a distance of 1000 miles. Their stay in Salt Lake was short. Very soon they were sent to Nephi, leaving Salt Lake City October 16th and arriving in Nephi 20 October 1863. While they lived at Nephi, Susan worked at a hotel kept by people by the name of Foote. She worked for six weeks to earn enough money to buy herself a calico dress and a pair of shoes.

She ultimately settled in Monroe, Utah marrying Jeppa Nilsson. They had eleven children, which now gives them a big posterity. Susan worked very hard until her health started to fail and after being bedridden for some time, died at age sixty.

Marilyn Magleby Hallows writes: During the depression years, when I was young, my Dad often had to work away from home, coming back to Monroe only on weekends. Some of this time we lived with Grandma Tuft (Lydia). She had a big house with three bedrooms upstairs, enough for Mom, the twins, Susann and Shanann and David and Dan. As the extra child, I slept with Mom during the week. When Dad came home, I slept with Grandma. Just beyond the foot of Grandma’s bed hung a big gold framed picture of her mother (inset above), Susan Swain Nilsson. When I slept with Grandma and it was time for bed, I would jump under the covers and close my eyes tight. Then in the morning I would quickly get up and leave the bedroom for fear that I would see Grandma Nilsson’s big beautiful eyes blink at me from her picture. Of course, when I grew older, I got over that fear and was very pleased a few years ago to inherit Great Grandma Nilsson’s picture. I hung it downstairs in our family room just across from the piano. It fit in so well with the other memorabilia from the past that we had displayed.
